How to Choose the Right Electrician
If you’re still unsure (or considering shopping outside of this list), here are some other quality assurance measures you can use to make your decision.
1. Verify Licensing & Insurance
Both the city and the County of St. Louis issue electrical licenses. Ask your electrician for their license number and check it on the county website. Confirm at least $1 million liability insurance and workers’ comp coverage; that shields you from property damage costs or on-site injuries.
2. Read Current Reviews
Google is generally the best source for reviews. Focus on comments from the last six months—those reveal how the company performs now. Look for notes on punctuality, communication, and cleanup. A small handful of bad reviews are normal, but be wary of repeat offenders.
3. Ask About Guarantees & Warranties
The industry standard is one-year warranty coverage on labor. Confirm manufacturer warranties on any installations, including panels, breakers, and fixtures. Request warranty and guarantee information in writing before work begins.
4. Collect Two or Three Written Estimates
Comparable quotes help you learn market rates and scope. Each bid should list labor, materials, permit fees, and a timeline. If one price is far lower, ask if they left out any charges—it could be permitting costs or cut corners.
5. Compare Communication Style
First impressions matter. Did the office respond quickly? Was the estimate clear and jargon-free? Contractors who respect your time before the job usually respect your home during it.

Why Choosing the Right Electrician Matters
A licensed, local electrician protects more than wiring—they protect your investment, comfort, and safety. Professional electrical work reduces fire risk, extends equipment life, and passes inspections the first time.
For business owners, quality electrical work prevents costly downtime. A seasoned commercial electrician can plan shutdowns during off-hours or on a staggered schedule to minimize disruptions.
For St. Louis locals, a quality electrician is better equipped to shield your home from the storms and flooding we face year after year. If storm damage leaves you with sparking outlets or a hot panel, call a 24/7 emergency electrician in St. Louis before using the affected circuits.
Choosing the right pro also prepares you for future upgrades. If you might want solar or an EV charger some day, for example, an electrician who thinks ahead can size your panel properly now to prevent repeat work later.
Quality costs a bit more up front but pays dividends in reliability and resale value.
Frequently Asked Questions
What qualifications should a licensed electrician in Missouri have?
To work as a licensed electrician in Missouri, professionals typically need to complete a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on apprenticeship. While Missouri does not have a statewide electrical license, most cities and counties (including St. Louis) require electricians to be licensed locally. Electricians must pass an exam covering the National Electrical Code (NEC), safety standards, and local regulations. Always ask for proof of licensing and insurance before hiring an electrician. You can view the official list of licensed electrical contractors in St. Louis County here.
Why are estimates for the same job different?
The brand of materials, scope details, and warranty length all affect the price. Ask each contractor to explain the differences so you can compare apples to apples.
Do I need a permit for small electrical work?
Simple fixes, like replacing a light fixture, are usually exempt from permitting. But if your project requires changing wiring (e.g., adding a new circuit or outdoor outlet), you’ll probably need approval from the city and county. Your electrician should manage this process for you.
Is it safe to do my own electrical work in Missouri?
In most cases, it’s not recommended. Electrical work can be dangerous if not done correctly and often requires permits and inspections — especially for major jobs like rewiring, panel upgrades, or new installations. Doing your own work without proper knowledge can lead to fire hazards, code violations, or costly repairs. To ensure safety and compliance, it’s best to hire a licensed electrician who understands Missouri's local building codes and safety standards.
